Oh, Conspicuous Consumption, We Missed You So

An improved market means that something some folks feel is a scourge on neighborhoods is back: mansionization. That's when someone buys a perfectly good house, tears it down, and builds a modern mini-monstrosity on the lot, totally out of sync with the other houses on the block. In L.A., it was rampant -- you'd find a neat row of ranch houses and, smack in the middle, a three-story, badly-designed, huge house wedged onto a small lot. It really changes the character of a neighborhood, not for the better. But should the city be able to tell someone what they can do with their property, beyond a certain point? (Los Angeles Times)
