You might think that the old "work your way up" concept is an illusion, but here's the story of the new CEO at Kroger who literally started with the company as a stock boy at one of the company's supermarkets in 1978. He was working his way through college; he worked so hard at the Kroger that a local VP asked him if he'd be interested in an accounting job with the company once he got his degree. And that ultimately led to running the entire national show and getting lauded for keeping the chain successful even with competition from Walmart. So, it CAN be done. (Cincinnati Enquirer)
