Starbucks Ain't The Same

Endangered: The New York City neighborhood coffee shop or diner. Why? High rents. In some neighborhoods, the good old counter-and-booths coffee shop with great breakfasts cheap and coffee to go in those blue-and-white Greek-themed cups is disappearing in the wake of escalating rents, and if you think that's nothing important, we're losing what made certain cities unique. Certainly, the New York coffee shop is so iconic -- what would "Seinfeld" have been without Monk's? -- that something oughta be done about this. What, I don't know, but it sucks that these places are disappearing. (New York Times)
