They Should Have Closed The Deal On Throwback Thursday

Keep an eye on Tribune Publishing, the newspaper spinoff of Tribune Co. that launches Monday. The reason that you should keep an eye on it is that it's a company based on a dying medium that's moved into digital with mixed results, and, saddled with a lot of debt shed by the former parent company, it seemingly has no chance. And if it does have no chance, what happens to some of the biggest names in the news media, like the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Baltimore Sun, Hartford Courant, South Florida (neé Fort Lauderdale) Sun-Sentinel, and Orlando Sentinel? I mean, they SAY they're in buying mode, but that balance sheet and the prospects for the newspaper industry in general aren't promising from the get-go. (Los Angeles Times)
