Would you go to Walmart as your primary care physician? I don't mean acute care or nurse practitioners or doc-in-a-box clinics like they have at CVS, but an actual primary care doctor? Walmart thinks this is the perfect answer to the problem of rural healthcare and a way to get primary care to people who have few or no other choices, and they stress that for more complicated courses of treatment, people will be moved to specialists. And Walgreens is doing something similar, although they're less aggressive in calling it primary care. Regular doctors are not happy with this and warn that it's a problem if a patient doesn't go to a more capable option when necessary. But if you have no other option or want to just see someone quickly and cheaply, Walmart may be your family doctor. (New York Times)
