Two homes in Maine have a private road to get to them; it's the only access. Wait, did I say "have"? Make that "had," because heavy rains washed out the road and now, they're looking for help to rebuild, which will cost them up to $85,000. The word "insurance" is not mentioned once, although this would be an "act of God," I suppose. Still, this is the kind of thing that can wipe you out -- the cost is a large percentage of the assessed values of the houses. What can you do when something like this happens? It's not like they can just shovel away the mud and be back in business. (Portland Press Herald)
