A blog is bringing attention to something in Vancouver that's a problem elsewhere, too: abandoned luxury homes. It's the result of speculators buying up houses and then leaving them to rot when the expected market boom didn't happen. The blog shows boarded up mansions, homes overrun by coyotes.... blight in places where you wouldn't expect it. The folks pointing this out want punitive taxation of owners who let their properties fall into abandonment and disrepair, but what makes them think the same owners who walked away from those homes wouldn't walk away from any taxes, too? What probably needs to happen is for the law to require upkeep or forfeiture to the government. (Vancouver Sun)
