And Under 007's Aston Martin Is A Yugo, I Suppose

I had no idea that the Batmobile was actually built on the bones of a real car. It was. Specifically, it was a Lincoln Futura, a concept car that was unveiled at the 1955 Chicago Auto Show. It was even on the Ed Sullivan Show, and in a Glenn Ford-Debbie Reynolds romcom. And then it was forgotten until 1965, when ABC asked George Barris to whip up a Batmobile quick, and Barris, who bought that concept car from Ford for ONE DOLLAR, did his magic. He sold it in 2013 for $4 million. Not a bad deal. See, this is the kind of history I love. (Also, that Glenn Ford-Debbie Reynolds romcom had a perfectly 1959 cast: Eva Gabor, Fred Clark, Edgar Buchanan as a Congressman, Harry Morgan, and Aunt Bee.) (New York Times)
