Michigan has redesigned its Mackinac Bridge license plate. It was once considered the world's best-looking plate, but there was one problem: Cops said they couldn't read it. White numbers on an orange background. Now, it's black-on-yellow. And this is something I've been saying for years: At some point, license plates went from being identification to being decorative. I liked it when you knew a state's plate from a distance and the numbers were bold and easy to read. New Jersey was black numbers on beige, New York blue on orange (or the reverse, earlier), and Pennsylvania was yellow on blue with the keystone in the middle. Easy. (WWJ/Detroit)
