This COULD Be Sort Of A Free Speech Issue, Actually
-
In Amsterdam, they spent a lot of money renovating the Royal Palace in Dam Square, and it's patrolled regularly, but the arches of the building have become a favorite place for the public to pee. Rather than seek a bathroom, people -- I'm guessing it's all guys, because, well, you know -- duck into the dark arches and whiz on the sandstone façade. They tried a fence to block people from peeing there, but the Interior Ministry decided that it was a poor fit for such a historic location, so they're putting in motion-sensor lights and warning the public that they'll get 140-euro fines. And the last resort will be this: If nothing else works, they're thinking about putting in a urinal that rises out of the ground at night and retracts under the sidewalk during the day. This is a lot of work over pee. (AP via Brunswick News)
