An NFL player allegedly hits his fianceé and the player gets special treatment. Ray Rice? Well, yeah, but it goes back much earlier, as in this New York Times investigation of Miami Dolphins DE Phillip Merling's alleged assault on his pregnant fianceé and special treatment by the team and police working together. Special treatment? After booking, they let Merling go out a side door and an off duty Sheriff's Office commander gave him a ride to the Dolphins' training facility in an unmarked car, then to his home to get his stuff (even though the judge ordered him to stay away from his fianceé). Merling was never suspended, never missed a practice or game, and allegedly kept harassing her with texts and damage to her car. The league never contacted the fianceé. The case was dropped because she couldn't travel to testify against him (she was eight months' pregnant when the hearing was scheduled). And you know how Ben Roethlisberger employed an off-duty state trooper, how the 49ers used off-duty cops... basically, it appears that the NFL has gotten cops to go into the tank for them.
