We've heard this before, but when two of the world's biggest chocolate makers say that we're running out of chocolate due to shortages in cocoa (dry weather, fungal disease) and increased consumption, that's cause for alarm. And the worst news: Industry efforts to develop trees that produce more cocoa are working but compromising taste. So, like tomatoes and other produce that have been engineered to the point of flavorlessness, cocoa might be on the endangered list in more ways than one. (Washington Post)
