There are 500,000 pay phones left in the U.S. This article seeks to find out who uses them anymore, and I bet you can come up with theories about that. But it's not just drug dealers. The phones actually make money for their operators, and they tend to be placed in high-traffic areas like airports as well as in low-income neighborhoods. 10 percent of American adults don't have a cellphone, so for them, it's an option. And there's also a market in buying and selling used, refurbished pay phones (with rotary dials!) to individuals. Will pay phones ever totally go away? (Los Angeles Times)
