And He'll Be Replaced By Another Crook, Most Likely
-
When I saw the news that New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is to be arrested on corruption charges, my reaction was: Finally. See, it was an open secret that this guy, maybe the most powerful person in New York, leader of the Assembly for decades and the man who can make or break anything before the state, might be ethically challenged. There was the matter of his huge income from law work when nobody could tell precisely what he was doing and the firm for which he "works" specializes in an area of law he doesn't do, and, apparently, he got tripped up by not reporting payments from another firm for... well, that's not the point for our purposes. For our purposes, the point is that these guys -- ones who everyone assumes are up to no good -- manage to get re-elected anyway. We saw it with Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY), re-elected despite an indictment. We see it in the long terms of do-nothing, patronage-awarding hacks. It's both parties. Are voters so inattentive? Do they just vote their party lines and pay no attention to the candidates? (New York Times)
