The View Is A Major Reason To Live There
-
What's interesting about Hermosa Beach's vote that rejected oil drilling off the city's coast is that as a result, the city not only won't reap millions in fees from the oil rights, but will have to pay millions of dollars in penalties to the drilling companies as compensation for the ban. But they knew that, and the city was smart enough to bank a lot of cash in budget surpluses to cover a big chunk of the liability. And it translates as a topic for everywhere: How much is quality of life worth? When do lifestyle, aesthetics, and environment trump really, really big bucks? I'm kind of glad that in this case, the voters said no to the rigs, because a) I like going to Hermosa and looking at the ocean and not seeing an oil rig, and b) I don't live there and I won't have to pay for it.
