When You Or Someone You Love Goes Through It, You'll Stop Laughing
-
A breast cancer survivor went to the bathroom at a Walmart. Two store staffers walked in and allegedly called her "sir" and asked her to leave, whereupon she turned around and they realized that despite her chemo-prompted lack of hair, she was, indeed, a woman. At which point they left, then, thinking she was gone, they came back and laughed at and ridiculed her looks, loud enough for other customers to witness. She went to the store manager, who would not meet with her. Walmart corporate is suitably mortified and apologetic, but people can really be a-holes about treating cancer patients as if there's something weird and funny and shameful about a woman losing her hair to chemo. Like that can be helped somehow. No cancer patient or survivor should be treated as an object of ridicule. And if you think it's okay to laugh and point and make fun of cancer patients, you'd better pray that it never happens to you. (KTVE-KARD-TV/West Monroe)
