Built Not To Last
-
Wait. They built the Newark Airport monorail to connect the terminals with the car rental buildings, parking lot, and Newark Penn Station AFTER I moved away from the East Coast, so it's not even 20 years old. They spent three quarters of a million dollars on it. And now, they're talking about more than a BILLION dollars to replace it. That's almost criminal. I mean, the New York subways are over 100 years old. The underground parts date back as far as 1904. I rode the Paoli Local in the Philly suburbs for years, and that was electrified in 1915. The Norristown high speed line trolley (aka the P&W or Red Arrow) dated back to 1907, and some of the cars back when I rode it were so old they seemed original. They couldn't get 20 years from the Newark Airport line before having to reconstruct the whole thing? Who approved that plan, and who's going to take responsibility... and why should taxpayers hand over more money to the same agencies to build another one? (Newark Star-Ledger/NJ.com)
