You've Tried The Rest, Now Try The Poly- And Perfluoroalkyl Substances
-
Another common chemical scare? Sure: poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are in a lot of things, from pizza boxes to sleeping bags and fire extinguishers. They've previously been called safe, but now some scientists and a Department of Health and Human Services official are calling for, of course, more research, because trace amounts of the stuff tend to show up in people's systems years after exposure. They want use of the chemicals suspended until they get some grant money... er, do more research. The industry people disagree, because they stand to lose a lot of money. In the meantime, maybe you want to cook your own pizza and not keep it in a box. (New York Times)
