Once again, we find out that laws put into place by the Los Angeles City Council banning new fast food restaurants in the impoverished Southern areas of the city have failed, And this Los Angeles Times article goes to some length to find reasons that fixing the problem requires even more regulation. But the truth is, besides the fact that the laws were poorly written, and allowed some new fast food restaurants to open if they were attached to strip malls, the fact is that you can't force people to eat better. You also can't force businesses to open in neighborhoods sell healthy food if the business model won't support it. Better supermarkets would help, but they need to educate people on how to cook healthier food at home before the demand will be there to support what they're looking for. (Los Angeles Times)
