You Shouldn't Have To Pay Extra For Being Female

Australia may or may not revisit the tax on tampons and other sanitary products for women after national Treasurer Joe Hockey (yes, that's his name) said that he'll lobby states to get rid of the tax (although PM Abbott REALLY wants to wash his hands of it, so to speak, and leave it to the states). This is where conservatives get in trouble: The tax was part of the GST, a national sales tax administered by the states and introduced by the John Howard government; when it was pointed out that the tax on tampons, a necessity, was unfair to women (and unequal, since things like condoms are not taxed), Howard said he didn't want to exempt tampons because he'd then have to exempt other things. That's what happens when you don't have women in critical decision-making positions. (BBC)
