Something about this short article about a cancer clinic that uses humor therapy makes me cringe a little. The problem is not the theory that humor helps recovery; I think that we know about that already, and you can Google Norman Cousins for some of that. No, it's that the quality of humor involved when it's prescribed is usually pretty awful. It's all very Patch Adams. Clowns and unfunny, corny jokes are the rule. If we're talking having the patients watch "Silicon Valley" or" Parks and Recreation" or some really good standup, that's one thing. Telling people to laugh and look at pictures of clowns isn't going to help. (KYW-TV/Philadelphia)
