If Only They Were This Enthusiastic About Academics

Months after dropping it, the University of Alabama-Birmingham has announced that football is coming back to the school. It was, the school president said at the time, a financial decision to drop the program just as it was showing some on-field success. It's a financial decision now, too: Alumni raised a ton of money for the cause. Now, it's a matter of when and on what level: I was at Villanova squarely in the gap between its former Division I football program (terminated due to weak ticket sales and financial tightness in 1981) and its reinstatement as a Division I-AA team. On the lower level, now in the Division I FCS, Villanova's a national power at a much lower budget; maybe UAB should consider that. (WBMA-LD-WABM-DT2-WDBB-DT2/Birmingham)
