Just Assign Everything A Number

In case you haven't noticed, Charleston has touched off a wave of reconsideration of history. And because of that, things named after Confederate officials, slave holders, and other people from the past are being reconsidered, too. Here's the thing: The people in question, and we're including Thomas Jefferson here, a slave owner, were, by the standards of their times, not out of the ordinary. Can we wipe their names off everything? And then there are the cases where nobody even remembers the person whose name was appended to a building or location. "Calhoun," as in Minneapolis' Lake Calhoun, was a Vice President and a Senator, but also favored slavery. But who knew who Calhoun was until now? On the other hand, why then honor a guy who supported something pretty horrible? On the other other hand, will taking their names off buildings and lakes and other things solve anything or even take a step towards a solution? (ABC News)
