You've seen the story about how NPR's Nina Totenberg's late father's Stradivarius was recovered after it was stolen 30 years ago, but the details raise an interesting question: Why did the thief take it in the first place? That's because the guy, a rival violinist, never sold it or played it in public. He kept it hidden. Maybe he played it in private, but if it wasn't for money or prestige, what was going on in his head? There are other ways to get to experience playing a Strad that don't involve stealing it.
