Not That Anyone Can Remain Calm When The Sirens Are Blaring

The Fukushima nuclear accident is a textbook case in what can go wrong when there's a nuclear disaster, with many people dying. But the deaths were NOT from radiation. No, the chief killer in the incident was panic, especially on the part of government. The sudden evacuation of critically ill patients who died because they were moved from ICUs, the suicides... those caused 1,600 deaths. Experts say that the radiation caused... zero deaths. The radiation that leaked wasn't enough to be linked to cancer, radiation was swept to sea and dissipated by winds, and had everyone just stayed put, the worst-case radiation scenario was like a full-body scan once a year for four years in the hot spots, less elsewhere. But when the alarm goes off, the first impulse is to run like hell. (New York Times)
