And We Still Don't Have That Safety System On The Trains, So We Learned Nothing
-
It's been 8 months since the Amtrak wreck in North Philly, and this piece in the New York Times Magazine outlines what we know happened. The strange part is, we have no idea WHY it happened. All the obvious explanations -- cell phone distraction, drug or alcohol use -- have been eliminated. It's possible that the conductor was temporarily knocked out when someone threw a rock at the windshield and he fell while ducking, but that may not have happened, either. The conductor remembers nothing after sounding the horn a few minutes earlier while passing through North Philadelphia Station. Is it possible that the formal explanation, due next month, will be "Sh-t Happens"? And if you lost a loved one in the crash, would you accept that sometimes, you can't explain a tragedy?
