Me, I Prefer Keeping Trucks Away From Sunbathers, But What Do I Know?
-
The locals in Daytona Beach are fighting the county's attempts to ban driving on the beach on two more miles of sand, reducing the permitted driving area to 15 miles, down from 47 miles in the '80s. It's a tradition they do not want to give up or see dwindle. But the county wants to clean up and develop the waterfront, and the developers don't want traffic behind their shiny new buildings. Not that I understand why you'd want to take your ride onto sand, even hard-packed sand -- that can't be good for the car -- but it IS what that area's known for. Getting rid of it loses something that makes Daytona Daytona, for better or worse. (New York Times)
