Siri, Get Me A New Phone
-
The New York Times tested Siri, Cortana, Google's voice commands, and Amazon's Alexa, the virtual voice assistants that are SUPPOSED to make your life easier. Do they? Not particularly. And that raises the question: Do you even use those things? I suspect only tech columnists do. Whenever I try to use Siri, it doesn't end well- by the time it properly understands my question (which isn't always the case), I could have looked things up myself. And even on simple tasks like "What movies are playing at my local theater," it fails: Siri can't find my local multiplexes, ever. Nice idea in concept, but the execution sucks. But in more encouraging news, asking Siri "what is one trillion to the tenth power?" gets you a sing-song recitation that people are using to make singalong music, beatboxing to Siri's rhythms. So it's good for something. (New York Times; BBC)
