Sorry, But You Can't Do Anything Nice, You're Rich

A comprehensive school -- that's the British equivalent of an American neighborhood public school that takes everyone based not on academic ability but usually on geography -- in north London is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and to mark that, they planned a laser light display and got a celebrity neighbor, actor Damian Lewis from "Homeland" and "Billions," to throw the switch at a ceremony. And for his nice gesture in participating in his local school's ceremony, he's being denounced by alumni from the school as "too privileged" to do the honors, since he went to Eton College's private (in the UK, that's called public) boarding school and therefore is a "wholly inappropriate choice." They'd prefer a graduate of the school, like -- this is serious -- the sax player from Madness or Ms. Dynamite, who was briefly a successful British Hip Hop artist a decade or so ago and has been obscure since then. (Oh, OK, she was featured on someone else's top-3 hit two years ago. That counts.) (And she punched out a cop, too, but apparently that doesn't matter.) But do you withdraw an invitation to someone who means well purely because he went to a boarding school, ignoring both intent and the fact that he's a neighbor who really does care about the school?
