They're A Pain, But They're Coming, So Let's Just Get It Over With Already

So, your credit and debit cards are all chip cards now, aren't they? This was supposed to be way more secure than swiping. Too bad retailers aren't turning their chip card readers on. And it's weird, since they're now totally liable for fraud if a stolen or cloned card is swiped rather than inserted into the chip reader. Why aren't they activating their readers? Nobody's sure. Maybe it's because the chip readers slow everything down. Maybe because nobody wants to be the first store to require them (although by now, you've probably encountered them, maybe at CVS, which is the only store around here to use them; Kroger's Ralphs chain has signs up saying they'll shortly switch over, too). But the banks made a big deal over this, and now it's the stores that are standing in the way. (The Consumerist)
