You Can Wait A Few Years, Can't You?
-
A landlord's evicting a 97-year-old woman after 66 years in her house. Seems that she had an agreement -- even the landlord recognizes this -- from the former owner and her descendants that she could stay as long as she lived. But the new landlord inherited the house because his estranged wife was murdered by her boyfriend, and he contends that he a) isn't bound by the verbal agreements, and b) has to dispose of the house, sans tenant, as a duty to his sons, who will inherit his estate. No, there are ways to make this work for everyone. The woman's 97, for f's sake. You can't send her onto the street, not when she really did have a lifetime lease. There are ALWAYS ways to delay these things for a few years. (San Francisco Chronicle)
