A study parsing the lyrics claims that most songs about aging are derogatory about growing old, but I think they kind of overstate their case. I mean, sure, "hope I die before I get old" is "derogatory" in one sense, but it's not meant as a comment on aging so much as a comment on the teen attitude (clearly, neither the person who wrote that and the guy who sings it meant it literally, 'cause they're still here). I doubt "When I'm 64" was really meant as critical of old folks because it talked about losing hair. Young people definitely can show signs of ageism, but pop songs really don't contribute that much to it, do they? (BBC)
