Getting Better, But Not Quite There Yet

The St, Louis Cardinals say that they're taking a former minor league pitcher's allegation that some teammates and coaches in their system subjected him to homophobic comments -- including talking about killing gay people -- and I think the remarkable thing that's happened is that the big controversy is not that he's gay but that there were homophobic comments. We are close to a time when being gay in pro sports will be completely a non-issue, but there are still a few troglodytes in the clubhouse, because there are troglodytes everywhere. The pitcher in question wasn't out at the time, and says he quit because of the pressure of being closeted; the good news is that he does feel like if he'd come out while pitching, he would have been accepted by the majority of his teammates. In 2016, generations coming of age are much, much more open and cool with gender and sexual variations. That is not a bad thing at all. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)
