More environmental problems you didn't see coming: The white storks of Portugal used to migrate to Africa during the winter, but they don't anymore. Why? Because they're eating garbage. Wait, what? Yeah, because Portugal is dumping trash in landfills, including discarded junk food, the birds are sticking around, not needing to go south for warmer weather and more real food. And at the landfills, they're eating... anything. Plastic. Whatever's not bolted down. This is not good for them. And now that the EU has new rules requiring food to be recycled, the birds will probably face severe food shortages, and we don't know if they'll instinctively migrate or die off. Well, we're about to find out. (BBC)
