That book that contends that math is not important and algebra is unnecessary and that it's why kids drop out of school is drawing both ridicule and praise. I'm inclined to lean towards ridicule, because while it's true that you might not need to know quadratic equations to do your ultimate job, it's not about that, it's about the way you think and solve problems. My career has zero to do with math, but knowing how to do math and algebra has shaped my thinking. Okay, if you work with your hands all day, maybe you don't need to think, but I think most people come out of math courses a little smarter, and that has to be worth something. And just because something's hard doesn't mean we shouldn't do it. (WHTM-TV/Harrisburg)
