President Snowflake Is Upset
-
Those of us in America sometimes forget that our devotion to free speech is not shared everywhere. Take Germany, where a comedian may face charges for insulting the Turkish President. No, really, there's a law against insulting foreign leaders, and while this comedian deliberately tested the law by doing an over-the-top rip on the President, it's still astonishing that a foreign leader is allowed to demand prosecution for someone IN ANOTHER COUNTRY making fun of him. And this puts Chancellor Merkel in an impossible position: If she declines to prosecute, the Turks will be angry and recent diplomatic deals will be jeopardized. If she does prosecute, the Germans will be angry. This is why free speech works better than any restrictions. (New York Times)
