Keeping Up Appearances
-
You might remember Neal Gabler as one of the replacements on "Sneak Previews" when Siskel and Ebert went to commercial TV. You may have read some of his many books. But this piece he wrote for The Atlantic is unique and covers a topic that many of you may be facing: living a middle-class life paycheck-to-paycheck. Over the years, he made money, just not enough to keep up with the bills. And he readily owns up to what got him there: Bad choices and spending that he should not have done, from where he lives to his kids' college tuition to choosing projects that take years to complete and stretch advances beyond their boundaries. A LOT of your listeners are scraping by like this, with no light at the end of the tunnel. (The Atlantic)
