Can't Say I'll Miss It, But Glad It Was Around

It's over: The Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena is finally closed after 56-plus years, and like all venerable public facilities that close, there are a ton of memories. It was the former home of the Lakers, Clippers, USC, the ABA Stars, the WHA Sharks, and for 14 games before the Forum was finished, the Kings. It was also a dump, to be honest with you. But it was OUR dump, and a fine place to see a game or concert (Bruce Springsteen vastly preferred it over Staples Center, where several levels of luxury boxes separate the cheap seats from everything). My strongest memory? Sitting front row for a Clippers-Warriors game amidst a "crowd" of about 1,000 people (announced: 2,500). The players were chatting with us, because there was nobody else to talk to. What's next? The new soccer stadium for the second L.A. MLS side, the expansion LAFC. (Los Angeles Daily News)
