The Help I Want Is To Be Left Alone
-
We expressed confusion here over why Microsoft bought LinkedIn, but the company has cleared things up, and now we're more confused. They want to merge LinkedIn contacts into your email? Fine, even if I don't really want that. They want to merge LinkedIn information into your calendar? Um, sure, if you want that, that's reasonable. They want to merge LinkedIn into Microsoft Word? Wait, what? Here's the plan: You're writing, and suddenly a window pops up saying that it appears you're working on topic X and do you want to ask your LinkedIn contact Y, who's an "expert" on that, for help? HOLY CLIPPY. As a writer (believe it or not, that's what I do), I do NOT want "help" unless I SEEK it. I definitely do NOT want my word processor to suggest ANYTHING. That would KILL creativity, KILL trains of thought... no. They'd better let you turn it off and they'd better make it opt-in only. Not that anyone would ever opt in. (New York Times)
