You Can Pay Them Now, Or Pay Them A Lot More Later

Port Authority police have had their hands full lately, what with fare-beaters on the George Washington Bridge and that guy on a horse on the Outerbridge Crossing the other week. Now, they've impounded a tow truck as it crossed the Goethals Bridge between New Jersey and Staten Island, another fare beater, but an epic one of those: $36,256 in unpaid tolls in over 850 violations, and he's facing $42,350 in penalties. He had E-ZPass accounts, but all were lapsed. The question is whether people who blow through toll lanes assume that they'll never get caught. Or whether, for every guy like this who gets caught, there are many who don't. (Staten Island Advance)
