Still happening: catalytic converter thefts, the easy resort of the meth addict. As we've heard countless times before, they contain precious metals (in tiny amounts), and the thieves cut the devices off cars and trucks and head for their favorite chop shop to sell them for a few bucks. The only things anyone can do is a) go after the metal dealers for enabling the theives, or b) put a cage around the devices, which won't totally stop someone from stealing the converters but serves as a deterrent -- the thieves move on to an easier job. Now, if we know this happens a lot, why don't auto manufacturers put cages around the things right at the factory? Why are they dangling off the bottom of your car, easy to grab? (Los Angeles Times)
