Lock The Kids In Year-Round. You Know You Want To
-
So, a few years ago, I noticed something. When I was in school, we practically always started after Labor Day and went to mid-June. We had snow days, but somehow we got everything in. Now, apparently, the school year's added so many days that some schools go from early August to late June, and when the Governor of Maryland declared that the year should start after Labor Day, there's concern that they'll have to cancel spring break if there are any snow days. Here's the thing: Everyone seems to agree that kids need more days in the classroom. Why? In my memory, many days -- especially the last few weeks of class, when the weather got hot and the classrooms were un-air-conditioned -- were kind of useless. Nothing was being taught or learned. Are we just assuming that more classroom days means more learning, or is there proof that it makes a difference? (Washington Post)
