Just Say 'Hey, You' For Everyone And You Can't Make A Mistake
-
Schools are now dealing with what some are calling a "microaggression": pronouncing student's names wrong. It's an issue now because immigration and cultural changes are resulting in more and more complicated or unusual names, and teachers are being warned that mispronouncing a student's name can cause self-esteem and cultural detachment problems. Is this really an issue? Teachers would frequently get MY name wrong and people still do -- yes, I get called "Paul" or "Terry" all the time -- and, well, it's not on me, it's on them. Should teachers be under the gun to never slip up on anyone's name? (Minneapolis Star Tribune)
