One Way Or Another, You Pay
-
You go to the emergency room because, yes, you have a medical emergency. Your insurance says it's all covered. And then you get a huge bill. Why? Because when you go to the E.R., you may be seen by a doctor who's not in your network, meaning you have to pay his or her bill. Everyone agrees that you can't possibly know who's who when you have an emergency and everyone agrees that it's unfair to you, but nobody's fixing this. Worse, three states have laws prohibiting this, but most insurance is regulated by national laws that override those state provisions and allow the insurance companies to avoid paying. This is a loophole that should be closed, (New York Times)
