Multitasking At 60 MPH - Not A Good Idea
-
Why are traffic fatalities up this year after a long period of decline? The experts say that distracted driving is to blame. And what's to blame for the increased distraction? Apps, because people can't break away from their phones even long enough to pay attention to the road. The "solution" of dashboard and voice control of apps may actually encourage MORE distraction due to increased use of the phone. And even autonomous cars might not be the answer; auto-pilot encourages people to not pay attention to the road and thus be unable to react quickly enough to override the auto-function. They're going to have to figure out what to do about this sooner than later, but right now, the experts are kind of baffled. (New York Times)
