Maybe This Will Be The Impetus To Carry Them Up To Mediocrity

Finally, after months of indications that this could happen, the Detroit Pistons have agreed to a deal to move back downtown and share the new Little Caesar's Arena with the Red Wings. If you're wondering when I advise Michigan taxpayers to hold onto their wallets, here you go: They'll be issuing a ton of bonds for the retrofit for basketball, and $55 million more for a proposed practice facility/community center which you can assume will be mostly a practice facility. And then there's the pie-in-the-sky estimate of the positive economic impact that doesn't mention how the dollars that will be brought to the area are already IN the area, they're just up at the perfectly adequate Palace in Auburn Hills (a/k/a Way The Hell Out In The Suburbs), which was completely paid for with private money and will now be likely razed because the land underneath it is probably worth more for redevelopment as corporate HQ campuses than it is as an arena. But, you know, sports. (Detroit News)
