I'm Pretty Sure There Are Other Good BBQ Joints Without Any Of That Baggage

What can you do if your father- your own flesh and blood - famously did racist things and you want to carry on the family business but escape from that part of the legacy? Meet the children of the owner of Maurice's Piggy Park, the South Carolina barbecue chain whose owner Maurice Bessinger was sued in 1964 for not serving black customers (he insisted that he DID serve them, only in segregation - in the kitchen), and put up Confederate flags at all locations when that flag was taken down outside the State Capitol. And after he got a big business going in selling his sauce nationwide, he decided to put the Confederate flag on the label. Maurice died in 2004, and now his kids run the place. They've taken the Confederate flags down, replaced with the U.S. flag; they banished the white supremacist flyers Dad would display. But there are some who suspect the motive is more business than social. So... would you go there now, knowing the history, and assuming that those in charge now are not racist? (Charlotte Observer)
