The board that determines how long (in consecutive hours and days) doctors can work has changed the number of hours first-year doctors can work in a row from 16 to 24 hours, and you have to wonder whether 24 hour shifts will be worth the risk and the danger to doctors' and patients' lives. The idea is that they won't be interrupted as much by having to hand over a case because their time is up, but wouldn't that be the case with any arbitrary number of hours? Why 24? Why not 22? 36? 12? (CBS News with AP)
