Three Feet Doesn't Sound Like A Lot, But You Don't Want To Be There If It Happens
-
We're getting more dire predictions of calamity from earthquakes in Southern California, as if we don't know we're vulnerable. The latest is a grad student's study that warns that if the Newport-Inglewood Fault blows, some beaches -- specifically, Seal Beach and Huntington Beach in northwest Orange County) -- could drop three feet in a matter of seconds. Can happen, and the fault is more active than previously thought, although that means that instead of a major quake every 2,300 years on average, it might be an average of 700 years or even 300 years. Still, we also are consistently warned about liquefaction and the danger of the beach towns' land going all liquidy under them, so it's not like we don't know the danger. What to do about it is another issue. (Los Angeles Times)
