Where's That 'The Rent Is Too Damn High' Guy When You Need Him?
-
Man, there have been a TON of stories about retail closings this week. The latest: Ralph Lauren is only the most recent to flee Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, with high rents the reason -- the revenue and prestige aren't worth the cost. When some of the world's great shopping streets are seeing "For Rent" signs, that's not great for the economy. But, then again, I'd be on Fifth Avenue or Rodeo Drive and think, who has the money to shop here? And the stores always seemed to be empty. So, is this an indicator of retail in general or just a problem on the luxury end? (New York Times)
